Sphe’s (Pearl Monama) track record with romance and love is appalling. Her marriage to Mazwi (Musa Ngema) was a business deal for their families that fell to pieces because she secretly had her brother-in-law Smanga’s (Moopi Mothibeli) baby after finding out that Mazwi is infertile. “She doesn’t love Smanga. The elders forced them to have a child to continue their families’ legacies,” explains Pearl. So she looks at him like a brother-in-law, nothing more. That’s why she thinks that it’s okay to set him up with her friend Zitha (Zoe Mthiyane), who has just come out of a chaotic engagement to businessman Tau (Rapulana Seiphemo). “Sphe notices that Smanga and Zitha are very friendly towards each other on Wednesday 3 October,” says Pearl. “She can give bachelor Smanga a girlfriend and help distract Zitha from Tau. It’s not like she is sticking her nose in their business –
and they would make a cute couple. She is just helping them realise that.”
DO YOU, DON’T YOU?
Sphe subtly quizzes Smanga about his love life later on Wednesday 3 October to make sure that she isn’t wasting her time. His answers make it sound like he isn’t interested in Zitha, but Sphe knows Smanga. She knows when he is trying to cover things up, which Pearl says is the only answer she needs to start planning a date night. Zitha on the other hand makes it clear that she’s too busy thinking about Tau to consider a new relationship, which Sphe ignores. Zoe reveals that even Zitha biting her head off on Thursday 4 October isn’t enough to deter Sphe: “Zitha doesn’t only warn Sphe to stay away from her love life, she’s fuming. She is still heart-broken after Tau left her at the altar in July this year. It’s too soon.” The last thing that Zitha wants is to have another reminder of Tau or a connection to him – Tau was married to Smanga’s aunt Karabo (Connie Ferguson) until she left him in February 2018. Zitha’s relationship with Tau lacked trust, so how could she trust another man who could be exactly like his uncle? Sphe backs off a bit to give Zitha a little breathing room, but at the back of her mind she has convinced herself that her friend’s outburst and instant change of topic is her method of hiding her feelings for Smanga. “She doesn’t listen with her ears,” explains Pearl. “She listens with her eyes and when she looks at Zitha, it’s written all over her face that she likes Smanga but isn’t ready to admit it to herself.”
YOU DIDN’T KNOW BUT…
Smanga hasn’t told anyone but he’s had feelings for Zitha since she arrived in town in February 2017. “He actually planned to ask her out, says Pearl, “but his uncle beat him to her. He took a backseat and ended up having a baby with Sphe, so he’s been busy.” Sphe goes back to him on Tuesday 9 October and this time she’s more forceful, telling him that he needs to take the bull by the horns and ask Zitha out that same day. “Sphe wants to see Smanga happy and focusing on something other than work. It’s just work, work, work and there’s no time for his own life,” adds the actress. He goes to Zitha and asks her if she’d like to join him for a drink, but smelling her friend’s handiwork, Zitha turns him down. She has no time for these games, even if it means saying no to a good, stable, hard-working man…
