For someone who plays a flamboyant character like Uzalo’s GC, one would think some of that fabulosity rubbed off on actor, Khaya Dladla.
One would expect Khaya to be just like his character, but he’s actually nothing like that, Khaya is cool calm and very collected. The Uzalo actor found it hard to portray GC because it’s not something he’s used to seeing. Although his openly gay and yes people would expect a gay guy to pull off a gay character perfectly, this wasn’t the case with Khaya.

”I needed to hang out with guys who are like GC in order to help me get into the character and pull it off.”

Khaya and his friends in real life are not even the show stoppers one would think they are, GC is way too extra and Khaya, well he’s a little more of a low key type of guy.

Coming out is usually one of the hardest things to do if you ask anyone in the LGBTI community,  luckily Khaya never had such difficulties.

When others went through the most trying to tell the world who they really are while fighting for acceptance from their loved ones and the community, Khaya was dressing up as a ballerina from a young age. ”I never had to come out to anyone, my family and friends knew and accepted who I was from the get go I have been the same his whole life.”

Playing GC has opened up many doors for him I mean GC is Uzalo,  Uzalo is GC but the greatest things that came out of portraying this character is the lives he has touched. Members of the LGBTI community consider Khaya an absolute hero and while some may envy him for living ‘“their lives” most applaud him for being a flag bearer and for proudly waving the Pink flag, something Khaya is very proud to do.’’I’m very grateful to be the person who tells this particular story because not many gay characters fully portray gays in the township who are still in the closet, hopefully, this will break the perception” he said proudly.

If you’re a real Uzalo lover then you know GC is a mess right now and he’s in serious need of help. If Khaya were a friend to GC this is what he’d say to him:

‘’Your mistake with uJojo was that you loved him more than you did yourself, you loved him before you and that’s where your mistake was. No relationship is guaranteed, married or not so for that reason and reason only, you need to love you first so that even if something goes wrong tomorrow you’ll be able to cope with not having the other person in your life”. Wise words from Khaya, real words to live by.

Apart from being an excellent actor, a dancer and an MC, Khaya is actually a singer and has been a backup singer and dancer for renowned productions like Sarafina and even The Lion King.

Although an album is not in the books at the moment for the actor, fans can expect a single. All those years in vocal training from stage productions have paid off because Khaya is finally ready for us to hear his voice and love him as a singer too.

”My single will be fun because it will be led by the public and I will give the public what the public wants because I don’t limit myself to any music genre, if my fans want gqom then it’s gqom they’ll have”.

The reactions of the single will direct an album in future, so all the Khaya Dladla lovers brace yourselves because a killer single is in the pipelines.
