The year is barely a month old and South Africa has lost stars. Death seems to have taken permanent residency on our shores and within a space of a week, South Africa, and the world as a whole, has lost 2 stars.
On 23 January, we woke up to the news that legendary Jazz Musician Hugh Masekela had died, aged 78. Masekela lost his battle with prostate cancer, for which he had been treated since 2008.
In October, he cancelled a scheduled performance at the Hugh Masekela Heritage Festival in Rockville, Soweto to dedicate himself to battling the disease and called on all men to go for regular cancer check-ups.
Two days later, 25 Janaury, Mzansi lost legendary actor, Sandy Mokwena, who acted as Bra Eddie in Scandal
The veteran actor who was popularly known as Bra Eddie was the soapie’s longest standing cast member.
Mokwena died in hospital on Wednesday night of natural causes.
e.tv publicist Michael Pocock told TshisaLIVE that Mokwena was ill a few months ago but that it didn’t “raise alarms” at the time.
“e.tv is deeply saddened by the news and our condolences go out to Sandy’s family and the cast and crew of Scandal! Sandy Mokwena has been part of Scandal! since the first episode which aired in January 2005,” read a statement from the channel.
Michael said that the actor’s family and colleagues have been left shocked by his death.
