Actor Motlatsi Mafatshe, who plays the much-loved Sechaba Moloi on SABC 3 soapie Isidingo, is upset that the soapie is coming to end and is pleading with the public to not let this happen.
The SABC announced at the end of November 2019 that the soapie that’s been running for 21 years will be coming to an end as from 12 March 2020.
The broadcaster says it came to this decision because the show had poor ratings and generated poor revenue, among other reasons.
In a heartfelt Instagram post, Motlatsi wrote in detail about what the show means to him.
“I grew up dreaming to be a part of this show because of the quality of actors this show produced and more than anything the level of storytelling that wasnt only not for black people but the entire nation [sic],” he wrote.
“Little did I know that it was actually also airing across the continent and the globe. #Isidingo as a show was and is not only reaching a different group of people but rather created its own LSM and niche, it has constantly broke the rules and redefined them.”
“From the crew to the production, from the cast to story. From the catering to abomama aba cleanayo…. Always driven by passion and love for what we do, not Ego. Profesionalism beyond measure.
Ask anybody who’s been there or worked there. The systems run like clockwork and are in check. Way better than most our other favorite shows and productions,” he continued.
The actor added that he doesn’t understand why the show is being canned because it is still performing better than other shows on SABC 3.
“@isidingo_ stands above the rest. That’s my truth and I’m sticking to it. Popularism doesn’t necessarily mean great production, performances or content. I also wished @sabc3 supported us.
Like other channels support their shows, because when the show was supported by the channel, we were cooking as a collective,”“Please don’t destroy a working system.
Don’t burn the college we ought to learn from…. Don’t sacrifice the mother, the children will go astray.” He wrote.Read more: ‘Isidingo’s’ Motlatsi Mafatshe on playing Sechaba Moloi for over 9 years
Motlatsi has been portraying the Sechaba role since 2009. The character grew from a shebeen manager to a mayor in recent years.
Sechaba’s relationship with Lerato played by Tema Sebopedi was also adored and many hearts broke when the pair headed for divorce, writing Tema out of the show.
A die-hard fan of the soapie has started a petition to save the soapie after learning that it was coming to an end.
More than 5 500 people have signed the petition at the time of publishing and the end goal is 7 500
