In 1986 December, a mother named Sophie Mathibela gave birth to twins named Mpho and Mphonyana Mathibela at Tshepong Hospital in Klerksdrop, North West. They were later transferred to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto.

Mph and Mphonyanao were no ordinary twins, they were conjoined twins, joined at the head. It was the first time for South Africa, there had never been a set of conjoined twins, joined at the head. In the country.

It was a moment of history in South Africa when Mpho and Mphonyana underwent surgery at the age of 17-months-old to separate them. In order for them to live separate lives.

The operation was successful and the twins were separated without any complications, however a year after the operation, in 1990 unfortunately one of the twins Mphonyana died of Pneumonia.The surviving twin Mpho is still alive, she is mentally disabled. Mpho is 34-years-old, she is healthy and she lives a normal life.
